About Dr. John Bandeian – Bristol Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Bandeian began practicing plastic surgery in Bristol in 1981. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, and has been Board Certified in Plastic Surgery since 1982.
Dr. Bandeian comes from a long line of doctors, and believes in the older values of medicine. His philosophy of medicine is similar to that of his father. He always strives to:
- Treat his patients the way that he would like to be treated by giving them the very best medical care possible, even if it takes more time and effort.
- Get to know his patients.
- Be scrupulously honest about what can and cannot be done.
- Minimize the waiting time in his office.
Dr. Bandeian is almost always available for his patients by telephone or by office visit. He encourages his patients to call his cell phone or his office whenever they have any questions. If patients need to see him, he is available, day or night.
Dr. Bandeian has dedicated his medical career to providing his plastic and cosmetic surgery patients with the highest standards of medical and surgical care, in a safe and comfortable environment. His attention to detail and superb surgical skills, allow him to consistently deliver optimal aesthetic outcomes. He does not believe in every new fad that comes along; therefore, he does not do procedures that he believes are overly expensive, unproven, or excessively risky. He restricts his practice to tried and true methods
Dr. Bandeian and Bristol Plastic Surgery Center offer a full range of services for patients wishing to conceal signs of aging and to achieve a refreshed facial appearance. Surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures are both available, many that have no down time.
Many patients are surprised to learn that none of the facial surgical procedures Dr. Bandeian performs require general anesthesia or admission to a hospital. All of the facial operations are done at Bristol Plastic Surgery Center using heavy sedation by vein and local anesthesia. This allows him to offer services that offset the effects of sun exposure, gravity, and smoking without the hassle and expense of lengthy hospital stays. (He performs operations requiring general anesthesia, such as breast reductions, breast enlargements, and tummy tucks, at Indian Path Hospital or Kingsport Day Surgery Center.)
Many patients who are considering facial surgery are often concerned about developing an “operated” or “unnatural” look that stigmatizes them as having had cosmetic surgery. Dr. Bandeian is very careful not to “over operate” on his patients, and, to the best of his knowledge, once the normal swelling from surgery subsides, none of his patients have ever developed the “operated look”.
MORE ABOUT DR. JOHN BANDEIAN
John Bandeian, MD, graduated from Harvard College, magna cum laude, where he obtained an honorary scholarship. He obtained a BS degree from Dartmouth Medical School, and graduated from Harvard Medical School. He completed his general surgical residency and was board certified in general surgery until 1990, when he decided to devote his practice exclusively to plastic surgery. He completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Kansas, and has been a board certified Plastic Surgeon since 1982.
Dr. Bandeian has been practicing medicine in Bristol, TN since 1981. He opened Bristol Plastic Surgery Center in 1984. The Center was the first facility in the state of Tennessee to have an operating room certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Plastic Surgery Facilities (AAAPSF). This allowed him, and his hard-working staff, to safely perform breast enlargements under general anesthesia. It was only after suitable hospital based surgery centers became more widespread that Dr. Bandeian stopped performing operations that require general sedation at Bristol Plastic Surgery Center.
Today, the operating room at Bristol Plastic Surgery Center meets the requirements for Level II surgeries, as defined by the State of Tennessee. To ensure the safety of his patients, both Dr. Bandeian and at least one of his nurses at the Center are certified in ACLS (advanced cardiac life support).
Dr. Bandeian believes in looking at the whole patient, not in simply restricting his focus to a particular cosmetic procedure. For instance, if a patient comes to see him for hooding of her upper eyelid skin, and during the work up, he learns that she has a history of heart disease or high cholesterol, he will take the time to discuss the latest concepts in cholesterol management, a topic near and dear to his own heart.
Dr. Bandeian believes in listening to his patients’ concerns. He encourages his patients to ask him all of their questions and he tries hard to make sure that his patients never feel rushed or pressured.
Dr. Bandeian is innovative. He and his son currently hold one active patent. He also likes to problem solve. Since suture removal can sometimes be painful, Dr. Bandeian modifies all of his suture removing scissors so that the tips are much smaller than commercially available. Therefore, when he removes sutures, the process is far less painful than it could be if performed using standard tools; in fact, it’s almost painless! Another innovation is the use to saline injections to simulate the expected results from injections of filler materials such as Juvéderm, Restylane or fat grafting. With this technique, patients get an actual preview (not a computer generation) of what they can expect to look like following injections of filler materials such as Juvéderm, Restylane, or even redistributed body fat.
Dr. Bandeian describes himself as a conservative plastic surgeon. His goal is to give his patients the great results they want using cost effective, tried and proven methods. His philosophy – not to immediately try the latest cosmetic procedures – has served him and his patients well over the years.
In the mid 1990’s the latest buzzwords in removing wrinkles on sun damaged facial skin were CO2 (carbon dioxide) lasers. Television talk show hosts hawked new, high tech laser devices as the best treatment tools available for those who were unhappy with everything from fine lines, to deeply set creases. Companies that sold these lasers claimed that they provided better, more reliable results than TCA and phenol peels. These ad campaigns were highly successful, and physicians paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase the latest in laser technology. Dr. Bandeian was not taken in by these claims. Within a few years, the physicians who purchased these “cutting-edge” CO2 lasers learned, to their dismay, that these costly tools routinely caused their patients’ skin to develop prolonged, severe redness. Tragically, such irritation often progressed, producing loss of skin pigmentation of the skin. After physicians learned about the long-term problems associated with CO2 lasers, this, once trendy, technology was largely abandoned. Dr. Bandeian has always had excellent, reliable results with phenol peels, and therefore, never got on this “high tech” bandwagon. Although, Dr. Bandeian has personally treated two patients whose faces were ruined by CO2 lasers once used in the tri-Cities area.
Dr. John Bandeian utilizes the most advanced techniques and technologies to provide top quality care for Bristol liposuction, breast augmentation and other cosmetic surgery patients.
